Alberta’s crude oil production has been steadily declining since 1974. In 2014, Alberta produced on average 590,000 barrels per day of crude oil. By contrast, production from Alberta’s oil sands (i.e., bitumen) has increased over the past few decades. In 2014, Alberta produced roughly 2.2 million barrels per day of bitumen. Almost all of Canada’s crude exports are destined for US refineries. This makes sense since the US is one of the world’s largest importers and refiners of crude oil. Canada’s export pipelines have been designed to accommodate the needs of the customer, which wasn’t a problem until very recently. Crude oil includes Canadian crude oil and/or equivalent.
